A man hit by an out-of-control car while walking his dog on a footpath in Melbourne’s outer-east last night is fighting for life in hospital.

The car crossed on to the wrong side of Dorset Road in Boronia and struck the 35-year-old and his dog about 11:00pm, police said.

The car then smashed through two fences and crashed into a unit, police said.

The man was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition and the dog died at the scene.

Detective Sergeant David Yeoman said two people in the car were also hurt.

“The occupants of the vehicle have been taken to various hospitals around Melbourne,” he said.

“Police have those occupants under observation at the moment.”

A passenger in the car suffered serious injuries and the driver, a 29-year-old woman from Kilsyth, suffered minor injuries.

Neighbours said they were startled by noise from the crash.

“There was a massive bang and the house shook and all the power went out and then I stumbled down outside and saw the mess,” one witness said.
