Tourist punched in bathroom

Police are searching for a man who allegedly assaulted a female French backpacker in a Melbourne hostel.

Victoria Police officers said the woman, 28, was staying at a King Street hostel when she was followed into a bathroom and punched in the face and kicked several times.

The tourist was left with a broken nose and arm.

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives believed the man was a past guest at the establishment, but was not known to the victim.

Police have released an image of a man who could assist with their inquiries into the August 28 incident.
