The parents of an 18-year-old jogger who went missing near Bendigo in Victoria last week have issued a statement expressing their “indescribable relief” that she was located alive.

The woman was found in a car at Maiden Gully on Thursday, more than 24 hours after she disappeared.

Her parents were overseas at the time of the incident but have now returned home.

In a statement issued by Victoria Police, family members said the “horrendous” experience had made them stronger.

After thanking the emergency services for their handling of the case, they also appealed for privacy.

“Our daughter is an inspirational young person and her friends exemplify a level of integrity and sincerity for which any community would be rightfully proud,” the statement said.

“As parents, it was indescribable relief on hearing that our daughter had been located alive.”

The statement thanked the emergency services, including Victoria Police, the SES and the CFA for their “tireless” efforts in locating the jogger.

“We are now in Bendigo to support our daughter’s recovery,” the statement said.

“This horrendous experience has made our family stronger.

“We have cried tears of distress and tears of joy and the ordeal will be ongoing as authorities now follow the appropriate judicial processes.”

Daniel Reimers, 38, has been charged and remanded in custody and will return to court in November.

The court has placed restrictions on the nature of the charges and the woman cannot be identified.
