A former neo-Nazi working as a Liberal Party campaigner has resigned after his affiliation was revealed.

Scott Harrison was reportedly a member of white supremacist group Church of Creativity.

Fairfax media reported he has been working on Liberal state election campaigns in the seats of Lara and Bellarine, near Geelong.

He said he had been involved in the Church of Creativity but left in 2010 when he was 19.

“I completely distance myself from my past ideology. I now realise how insane it was. I now believe in racial equality and gay marriage,” Mr Harrison told The Age on Wednesday.

In 2010, Mr Harrison reportedly argued the Port Arthur massacre was the work of Jews.

Victorian Liberal Party director Damien Mantach said the party was unaware of Mr Harrison’s previous affiliations.

“His comments are unacceptable and do not reflect the views of the Liberal Party,” Mr Mantach said in a statement.

“He has now resigned from the party, effective immediately.”

The Church of Creativity’s website lists a number of white supremacist beliefs, including that creativity was the essence of the white racial soul.

“Without the white race any worthwhile culture and civilisation are impossible,” the website said.

Opposition scrutiny of government spokesman Martin Pakula said Mr Harrison’s presence as a Liberal staffer showed a concerning tolerance for extremist views within the party.

He said people made mistakes in their youth, but this went further than just teenage hijinks.

“I think being a neo-Nazi is in a different category,” Mr Pakula told reporters.

He said Mr Harrison’s 2010 comments could have breached racial vilification laws.
