Perfection at Bells

Australian Kai Otton and defending champion Adriano De Souza were among the early second round winners at surfing’s Rip Curl Pro contest at Bells Beach on Sunday.

Brazilian De Souza opened the day in 1-1.5m waves with a high-scoring 16.84 to 13.76 victory over American Brett Simpson.

Last year, De Souza became the first Brazilian to win at Bells Beach.

Otton, 33, dominated his encounter against another Brazilian, Raoni Monteiro, winning 14.84 to 11.54.

Otton finally broke through for his maiden WCT victory last year when he won in Portugal.

He finished 2013 ranked a career-high seventh in the world but has made a slow start to 2014.

Irishman Glenn Hall caused an upset on Sunday, downing Tahiti’s Michel Bourez 13.20 to 9.34.

Bourez had won the previous event at Margaret River.

With conditions predicted to remain favourable throughout the day, organisers are hoping to finish round two of the men’s competition and complete rounds two and three of the women’s event.
