Bomb experts sweep Victorian farm site

Bomb experts are sweeping a western Victorian property for explosives after a six-hour siege that ended with a man feared dead and two police injured, one critically.

Officers at the Derrinallum property had been negotiating with a man wanted over a violent incident, when an explosion levelled his house and several outbuildings early on Saturday.

The man’s fate will remain unclear until experts declare the property safe.

The police bomb response unit was checking for more explosives on Sunday.

Police said the man became irrational and threatened self-harm after they went to the property to investigate a violent incident that occurred earlier in the week.

Trained negotiators were called in but it’s believe the man set off an explosive device, which injured the two officers from an unnamed specialist unit.

One was flown in a critical condition to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne with head injuries.

His colleague suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to Geelong Hospital.

Homicide detectives and the professional standards command are investigating.
