A light plane has crashed near Shepparton airport in northern Victoria.

It is believed there were two people on the plane when it crashed close to the Goulburn Valley Highway a short time ago.

There is no word yet on whether the two people survived.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) says the plane crashed into terrain soon after take-off.

It is investigating the cause of the accident.

The Goulburn Valley Highway is closed in both directions.
