Officer accused of assault ‘hid evidence’

A County Court jury has been told a senior policeman assaulted a man then hid evidence and lied about it during an Office of Police Integrity (OPI) investigation.

Grant Allan, 42, is facing 15 charges, including assault, attempting to pervert the course of justice, and 11 counts of perjury.

The charges relate to Allan’s time as a senior detective at the Maryborough Police Station in 2010.

In his opening statement to the court sitting in Bendigo, the Crown Prosecutor said Allan had broken a man’s collarbone during a drug raid on a Maryborough home.

The jury was told a complaint was made to the OPI and that Allan hid documents from investigators to thwart their inquires.

The jury was shown footage of Allan being interviewed during an OPI hearing, and was told it showed he lied under oath multiple times.

The trial has been scheduled to run for five weeks.
