Emergency warning for Tasmanian blaze

A firefighter has been injured and an emergency warning remains in place for an out-of-control bushfire on Tasmania’s east coast.

The firefighter received minor injuries, was immediately treated, then given the all-clear while working on the fire at Dolphin Sands.

An emergency warning for the fast-moving blaze, which covers 56 hectares and is threatening homes, remained in place on Wednesday morning.

“The fire danger will be severe. Fire under these conditions will be uncontrollable and fast-moving,” the Tasmania Fire Service said.

“Embers, smoke and ash falling on Dolphin Sands East could threaten your home earlier than the main fire.”

The service urged residents to stay up-to-date with the latest information about the fire – and to evacuate before it hits.

“Conditions may change with little or no notice, therefore residents are to be prepared to relocate to a safer place, such as the Nine Mile Beach, if conditions require,” the service said.

“If people don’t live in the area, they are urged to stay away.”

TasNetworks, the state’s electricity provider, said nearly 750 customers were without power on Wednesday morning.

“We are working closely with the Tasmania Fire Service but still unable to safely access the area,” it said in a tweet.

“Current estimates suggest we might be able to gain access tomorrow.”

The fire was reported at 2.30pm on Tuesday after a registered burn escaped from a property.

Acting District Officer Steven Walkley said overnight fire crews had protected properties threatened by the fire and so far there are no reports of any homes or shacks being burnt.

Changing winds overnight made extinguishing the fire very difficult.
