Brickworks traders pack up their stalls

The future of the Brickworks Markets at Torrensville remains uncertain after stallholders closed their doors over the weekend.

Nearly 40 traders have now cleared off the site so work can begin on the construction of a $50 million Woolworths shopping centre.

The West Torrens Council is yet to decide whether another lease will be granted.

Brickworks Traders Association chairman Evan Ignatiou says traders will fight for the markets to return.

“It’s been a roller coaster ride that’s for sure and what they’re going to do now I’m not sure,” he said.

“We hope they can put the past behind us and the council can start thinking about community benefit from what’s left over.”

He says traders are upset an alternative could not be reached.

“There’s no guarantee that we’re coming back so I think that’s the sad bit. I think we had a lot of optimism there and that kind of isn’t there now and with the reality of packing all your stock away and shifting all your fittings out it seems a lot more of a reality that you might not be back.”

A final decision on whether stallholders can return to the site once the development is complete will be made by the council at the end of November.
