Lake Bonney at Barmera could soon also be known by its Aboriginal name.
The First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee Region put in a request to the surveyor general for Lake Bonney to be also officially known by its traditional name, Barmerara, meaning ‘place of large water’.
The surveyor general has approached the Berri Barmera Council for input on the potential dual naming.
The council’s chief executive, David Beaton, says it has suggested consulting residents at Barmera, Cobdogla and Loveday.
“If they undertook more consultation, they would have more status about the opinion than just the views of the council as well,” he said.
“It needs to be conducted in a way that everyone gets behind it once the changes are made.”
Mr Beaton says the surveyor general will make the final decision.
