The police officer critically injured by two teenagers driving in a stolen car is now expected to make a full recovery.

There had been fears for Constable Peter McAulay’s life after he was dragged several metres by a car at Booval on September 28, while laying road spikes in a bid to stop the stolen vehicle.

Constable McAulay suffered critical head injuries, broken bones and fractures, and was in an induced coma for several days.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart posted a photo on Twitter on Monday, saying the 24-year-old officer was making a “miraculous recovery”, although he still had a way to go.

“Peter, we wish you a swift and complete recovery,” Mr Stewart said in the tweet.

“Our thanks to all who have supported Peter in this journey.”

Mr Stewart also thanked ambulance officers and health staff for their efforts.

A 16-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl have been charged with one count each of attempted murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, in relation to the incident.

They have made no application for bail and are expected to appear again in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

At the time of the accident, Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said Constable McAulay had only just started his career, after graduating from the police academy in 2014.

“This is a reminder for all police on the sacrifice and what police do,” Mr Leavers said.
