A man shot by police in a Gold Coast apartment basement has been charged with attempted murder at a bedside hearing.

Two constables were investigating reports of a suspicious vehicle at Solaire Apartments in Surfers Paradise about 1.30am on Sunday when they were allegedly confronted by a 26-year-old man with a weapon.

A number of shots were fired, at least one of which hit the man.

The man underwent surgery for non-life threatening gun wounds at Gold Coast University Hospital on Sunday.

He was charged at a bedside hearing on Monday with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of ammunition as well two counts of serious assaulting police whilst armed and breach of bail.

He was remanded in custody and is due to face the Southport Magistrates Court on February 9.

An Ethical Standards investigation is being held into the shooting.
