A woman was taken to hospital after a pole she was holding was struck by lightning, and more than 7000 properties in Brisbane and surrounding areas have lost power as heavy rainfall, hail and damaging winds bear down on south-east Queensland.

The latest severe thunderstorm warning from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) was issued at 3:50pm for people in the Brisbane city and parts of the Logan, Scenic Rim, Redland City and Moreton Bay council areas.

It said thunderstorms were detected near Brisbane CBD, Slacks Creek, Tingalpa Reservoir, Camp Hill, Enoggera and the area south of the New South Wales border.

They are forecast to affect Cleveland, Strathpine, Redcliffe, Brighton, Kallangur and Scarborough by 4:20pm and Tangalooma, northern Moreton Bay, Deception Bay waters, Beachmere, northern Moreton Island and Bribie Island by 4:50pm.

It has already passed over the Brisbane area.

A BOM forecaster said the storm lost some of its intensity as it approached the CBD.

Woman taken to hospital after lightning strike

Queensland Ambulance Service says a woman in her 50s was struck by lightning at Helensvale at 3:25pm while holding a pole.

She has taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

A male teen was also injured after a tree fell on him at Forest Lake.

He was taken to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in a stable condition with hip and leg injuries.

Earlier warnings classified the storm as “very dangerous” although that has since been downgraded.

Energex is reporting more than 7000 properties around Brisbane and Logan are now without power.

A spokeswoman said crews would be out as soon as they could to repair fallen powerlines.
