Part of a recording between Gable Tostee and the woman he is accused of murdering, detailing alleged moments of violence and expletive-ridden conversations before her fatal fall from his Gold Coast apartment balcony, has been played to a court.

Tostee on Monday pleaded not guilty to murdering New Zealand tourist Warriena Wright on the Gold Coast in August 2014.

Ms Wright, 26, fell from a 14th-floor balcony in the Surfers Paradise apartment where Tostee, 30, was living at the time.

The prosecution alleges Tostee caused Ms Wright to fall by threatening her, but the defence argues their client was defending himself.

On Monday afternoon in the Supreme Court in Brisbane, a recording of the pair made on Tostee’s mobile phone prior to her death was played for the jury.

In it, they can be heard drinking and chatting to music.

Some time later, Ms Wright is heard hitting Tostee, who yells out in pain and says “that’s enough”.

More time passes and the music is turned off. Ms Wright can be heard looking for her belongings.

When she cannot find her phone, she threatens to call police and yells: “I will f***ing destroy your jaw. It’s not f***ing funny.”

Tostee says: “I didn’t say you have to leave, I just said stop beating me up.”

“I don’t deserve this s*** alright. I’m a nice f***ing guy … calm down, please,” he says.

“You were beating me up for no reason. You thought it was funny. It’s not.

“You meet some weird people off Tinder.”

In his opening address, prosecutor Glen Cash said Tostee becomes increasingly angry in the recording, while Ms Wright sounds more fearful.

He said Tostee could be heard trying to choke or strangle Ms Wright before locking her outside.

The defence has disputed their client tried to choke Ms Wright.

Earlier, the trial heard from Ms Wright’s younger sister Marreza Wright, Tostee’s neighbour Gabriele Collyer-Wiedner who saw Ms Wright fall, and detective Michael Chalmers who found the audio recording of the pair on Tostee’s mobile phone.

The trial resumes today.
