A woman has told how a teenage boy ran up her driveway on fire and had to be hosed down and dunked in a cold bath by her granddaughter.

The 14-year-old boy from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast was well alight when he approached a block of units at Sunrise Beach around 7:00pm (AEST), police said.

A woman at the unit said her 17-year-old granddaughter heard screaming, and when she went out of the unit she saw the boy running up the driveway on fire.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said her granddaughter got the garden hose to douse him.

She then took him inside and put him in the bath with cold water and called the ambulance.

The boy was flown to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in a serious condition, suffering burns to his chest.

A police spokesman said there were no witnesses to how the fire started and officers were investigating whether it was an accident or something else.

“It could be an accident, but we don’t know,” a police spokeswoman said.

“We are yet to speak to the boy. We are waiting to do that to get a version of events.”
