Footballers charged with rape

Two men charged with raping a friend with a beer bottle are in a Brisbane football club’s training squad, a court has heard.

A total of four men are facing charges over the alleged rape on Australia Day this year.

The 19-year-old male victim made a complaint after becoming aware that video of the alleged incident had been posted on social media.

The court heard the alleged rape happened after heavy drinking, and the victim had passed out in a bedroom when the alleged rape took place.

It also heard the video was widely distributed, including to the victim’s girlfriend and brother.

Police said they charged three 19-year-olds and a 21-year-old man with rape.

Two of the men are also charged with distributing prohibited visual recordings.

Charges against one of the 19-year-old defendants were mentioned in court today.

The court heard two of the accused were in a Brisbane football team training squad and a non-contact order would be difficult due to their sporting commitments.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Scott Pearson told the court the incident would have been “humiliating for the victim”.

Defence counsel Eugene O’Sullivan told the court the four accused were old school mates and family friends.

Mr O’Sullivan said his 19-year-old client was not guilty and the incident had been a “youthful prank”.

The magistrate refused an application to revoke a non-contact order between two of the defendants.

The three other men are due to face court on October 26.
