Missing mango found

An ABC talkback caller has found Bowen’s missing Big Mango in north Queensland.

A Bowen Tourist Information employee arrived at work on Monday morning to find the 10-tonne fibreglass structure gone.

It has been confirmed the incident was a publicity stunt from the Nando’s fast-food chicken business.

Bowen resident Bob Russell told ABC Radio the 10-metre-high fruit is lying in the bush behind the information centre where it usually sits.

Mr Russell says the mango has been hidden well.

“They’ve laid it over on its side on a couple of tractor tyres by the look of it and covered all that end that’s facing Bowen with big, long tree branches and shade cloths so nobody can see it,” he said.

“It’s a pretty hard thing to hide.”

Police said yesterday they had not received an official complaint and were not investigating the mango’s disappearance.
