Baby girl rescued from burning car crash

A 10-month-old baby girl has been rescued from a fiery car crash that killed her mother in south-east Queensland last night.

Police say a 21-year-old woman died after a semi-trailer slammed into the rear of her car as it was turning into a driveway on the Cunningham Highway, south-west of Aratula.

Inspector Keith McDonald says a passing motorist miraculously rescued the woman’s daughter from the burning wreck.

“The baby girl has received injuries – what the extent of those injuries are at the present stage we are not sure, but she has received injuries,” he said.

“The incredible part if there is any good news out of this tragic incident is the heroic actions of passers-by to get into the car and retrieve this baby girl.

“Their heroic actions with both vehicles on fire – they have gone into the rear of the car and retrieved a 10-month-old baby girl.”

He says the baby was taken to the Mater hospital in Brisbane.

The 38-year-old driver of the semi-trailer was also taken to hospital but his injuries are not considered serious.
