Fears City Place revamp hurting Lake St traders

A Cairns regional councillor says measures must be put in place to give pedestrians access to CBD businesses affected by a road closure.

Part of Lake Street, between Aplin and Shields streets was closed on Monday for an upgrade to City Place.

Rob Pyne says some businesses have already been forced to close because foot traffic has been affected.

“What I would suggest is what you see routinely in other places and that is some sort of interim measure, a construction pathway so pedestrian traffic can get down past the parking station, past the library, as it always has been able to do,” he said.

Cr Pyne says Lake Street will remain closed for the next three months as City Place is upgraded.

He says the works should be done in stages.

“Do the construction where most of the work’s happening and open that area close to Aplin Street back up,” he said.

“One of the benefits of having a business in Lake Street is the through traffic, people are walking down there to get from ‘A’ to ‘B’.”
