Council wants more powers to tackle bats

The Lockyer Valley Regional Council says it is time for the Queensland Government to act on problem flying fox colonies.

Delegates at a local government conference this week have voted for enhanced powers to remove bat colonies from urban areas.

Councils want streamlining of state and federal approval processes.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones says they also want more powers to cull and create bat-free zones.

“[Premier] Campbell Newman is very supportive but some of the ministers are less supportive and some of the bureaucracy is not very supportive at all and one would have to think if they’re prepared to take on the bikies they could certainly handle an old flying fox,” he said.
