Drunk arrested for sleeping in drive-through

A 30-year-old drink-driver has been arrested in the drive-through lane of a Darwin fast-food restaurant after falling asleep behind the wheel while waiting for his order.

McDonalds Ludmilla staff were unable to wake the man, who fell asleep in the driver’s seat with the engine running at the pick-up window.

Police and emergency services were called and after conducting a health assessment the man was breath-tested, returning a blood alcohol reading almost four times the legal driving limit.

Duty Superintendent Kylie Proctor said the staff on duty at the time did the right thing to call for help after the man did not respond when his order was ready.

“He was woken up by us and subjected to a breath test and surprise, surprise came back with a positive result, he posted 0.196 per cent so he was a high-range drink-driver,” she said.

“Kudos to the staff who actually refunded his money before he was taken away by us but I suspect it’s still probably the most expensive takeaway meal he’ll ever order.”
