The Darwin City Council is set to launch a new program to reduce problem drinking on the city’s streets.

If given the go ahead the $300,000 dollar project would include outreach workers to help people into sobering-up shelters and a service to help residents design their premises to discourage drinking.

The Larrikia Aboriginal Corporation already runs a night patrol program to deal with problem drinkers in Darwin.

But Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim says more needs to be done.

“The council does believe that there is an issue with public intoxication in our city and in or public spaces and that is why we are trying to work cooperatively with the other levels of government,” Ms Fong Lim said.

The council will vote on whether to adopt the Public Intoxication Community Wellbeing Project at tomorrow night’s council meeting.
