A woman has been charged with attempted murder over a horror car crash that left her young passenger suffering serious burns.

Both the 31-year-old woman and the seven-year-old girl were pulled from their flaming vehicle after it smashed into a truck on the Great Western Highway at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains about 6.30am on Monday.

The girl was flown to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a serious condition, while the woman was taken to Westmead Hospital by road.

NSW Ambulance said at the time the child sustained burns, while the woman suffered burns as well as leg and chest injuries.

After a two-day investigation, police arrested the woman in hospital on Wednesday and charged her with the girl’s attempted murder.

The 31-year-old was due to appear in Parramatta Local Court via a bedside hearing on Thursday.

The driver of the truck was not injured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A woman bystander in her 20s was also treated for minor burns and taken to Blue Mountains Hospital.

Fire and Rescue NSW superintendent Adam Dewberry said at the time the vehicle was on fire when crews arrived.

“Passers-by pulled both of the occupants, a lady and a child, out of the vehicle,” he said.

“Firefighters commenced emergency medical treatment on the child that was suffering some pretty serious burns.”
