Man dies in bushfire on NSW north coast

Man dies in bushfire near Kempsey

A 56-year-old man has died after a bushfire swept through properties on the NSW mid-north coast.

The man’s body was recovered from a property at Stony Creek Lane at Temagog, roughly 30 kilometres west of Kempsey.

Emergency services were called to the property about 10.15pm on Monday, following concerns for the man after a bushfire tore through the area.

“On arrival, officers from Mid-North Coast Police District located the body of a man; his bulldozer nearby was destroyed,” NSW Police said on Tuesday.

The man has not yet been formally identified but is believed by police to be a local property owner.

As of 7am on Tuesday, the blaze at Willi Willi Road, had burnt more than 10,000 hectares and remained out of control, with a watch and act warning in place.

It was one of nearly 70 fires burning across NSW on Tuesday.

“As of 8am, there are currently 69 fires burning around the state, with 32 not yet contained. One fire is burning at a watch and act level. While there are no total fire bans today, several areas in the north of the state will experience high fire danger,” the NSW RFS wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

It said on Monday night that people in Willi Willi, Warbro Brook, Willawarrin, Mungay Flat, Temagog or Toorooka, should monitor conditions and be prepared to act.

Shortly before midnight, the RFS said conditions had eased on the fireground. However, firefighters worked through the night to contain the fire.

The fire was moving erratically in multiple directions.

Another fire at Springwood Park Road near Cope in the Central Darling Shire east of Dubbo was brought under control and an emergency warning lifted on Tuesday morning.

Overnight people in properties west of Ulan Road in the Cook’s Gap and Ulan areas were told it was too late to leave and to seek shelter.

Second day of danger for Queensland

Queensland remains under an extreme fire warning for a second day after a bushfire forced residents in the south-east to leave their homes.

The blaze at Wutul and East Cooyar, north of Toowoomba, prompted prepare to leave and not safe to return warnings from authorities on Monday.

Locals have since started returning after concerns were downgraded early on Tuesday.

“The fire near Dukes Road is now burning in containment lines and will continue to burn for several days,” Queensland Fire and Emergency Service said.

But extreme fire danger warnings were still current for areas in the Central West, the Bureau of Meteorology said on Tuesday.

Daytime temperatures are expected in the mid to high 30s on Tuesday with 25-40km/h south-easterly winds.

Winton is expected to reach a maximum of 38 degrees, while Longreach and Barcaldine will hit 37 degrees and 36 degrees respectively.

Warnings for a fire near Tara have been cancelled and advice alerts are current for a blaze in Oyster Creek, Baffle Creek, Deepwater, Rules Beach and surrounding areas.
