People affected by the devastating floods in northern NSW will have their chance to voice their concerns at a public forum.

Former police commissioner Mick Fuller and Professor Mary O’Kane are leading the inquiry into the disaster, and will host a public forum at Lismore’s Southern Cross University on Tuesday evening.

The state government asked Mr Fuller and Prof O’Kane to examine the preparation and response to the catastrophic floods that hit from late February to early April, primarily in the Northern Rivers region.

In the first week of March, northern NSW received more than a year’s worth of rain, and at the end of the month more heavy rain forced thousands to flee their homes for a second time.

Torrential downpours hit the coast again on April 7, with Sydney getting nearly a month’s rain overnight and thousands ordered to leave their homes.

The first three months of 2022 brought a year’s worth of rain to Sydney.

The final report will be delivered to the NSW government by September 30.

“Every single contribution from these meetings and from the public submissions will be considered in this inquiry and will inform our final report,” Mr Fuller said.
