A man has been charged following a brawl at a Liberal Party branch meeting in southern Sydney last week.

Police were called to a kebab shop in Arncliffe about 7pm on June 18, with officers saying they saw “numerous people running from the location”.

A 27-year-old Arncliffe man was arrested after attending a police station at about 2pm on Tuesday. He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, assaulting an officer and resisting an officer.

The incident occurred during a NSW Liberal Party function at Naji’s Cafe, which turned ugly when members started fighting over the group in charge of selecting councillors.

A man in his 40s was taken to St George Hospital after receiving minor injuries in the incident, and an elderly woman was allegedly pushed to the ground.

In a statement last week, the Liberal Party said it was aware of the incident and was co-operating with police.

“The party will fully co-operate with the police in relation to their inquiries. An internal investigation will also be undertaken and disciplinary action taken against those responsible,” it said.

“The Liberal Party strongly condemns the kind of behaviour that is alleged to have occurred.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also condemned those involved, telling question time he agreed with the state branch’s objection to the violence.

“I entirely concur in that condemnation by the New South Wales Liberal Party and look forward to their providing full co-operation with police in their inquiries,” he said.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court in August.
