A 47-year-old man has been arrested over the alleged rape and abduction of an 11-year-old schoolgirl in Newcastle earlier this week.
Police arrested the man after pulling him over during a vehicle stop on Beaumont St, Hamilton, around noon on Saturday.
The girl has told police she was allegedly approached from behind by a man armed with a knife as she walked to school through a park in Adamstown Heights, south-west of the city centre, on Tuesday.
The 11-year-old girl was allegedly threatened with the knife, sexually assaulted and forced into a car.
She was then driven to bushland where she was allegedly sexually assaulted again before being released about five hours later at Kotara Railway station, according to a statement from NSW Police said in a statement.
The schoolgirl walked 1.5 kilometres on her own before raising the alarm at home and was taken to John Hunter Hospital for examination.
A special strike force of detectives was set up to find the alleged attacker who was arrested following the vehicle stop on Saturday.
The 47-year-old man is in custody at Newcastle Police Station and is expected to be charged later today.
