A man has been arrested at the Sydney home of singer and entertainer Maria Venuti on the same day she was hospitalised after suffering a stroke.

The vivacious cabaret performer and actor, 75, had the stroke on Saturday morning at her Gladesville home and is recovering in hospital with daughter Bianca at her side.

Bianca has requested “prayers, mantras and good vibes for Maria over the next few days”, Australian Ladies Variety Association (ALVA) president Susie Smither wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at a house in Gladesville at about 9am on Saturday and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for assessment, a NSW police spokeswoman said on Sunday.

She declined to comment on reports that the man had been stalking Ms Venuti.

There have been reports Venuti was at home alone when she was disturbed by a man who allegedly had started harassing her weeks ago.

Venuti sounded an alarm, alerting police, before collapsing.

It’s understood police arrived to find a 38-year-old man still on the premises.

Witnesses said the intruder was Tasered before being apprehended.
