Harriet Wran is set to walk free from prison after spending just over two years behind bars for her role in the robbery and murder of a Sydney drug dealer.

The daughter of former New South Wales Premier Neville Wran, Harriet Wran’s case drew such intense media attention that the judge residing on the case decreased her sentence due to the impact her reputation had suffered.

“In my opinion the publication of these egregious articles warrants the imposition of a sentence that takes account of Ms Wran’s continuing exposure to the risk of custodial retribution, the unavoidable spectre of enduring damage to her reputation and an impeded recovery from her ongoing mental health and drug-related problems,” Justice Harrison said in his judgment of the 28-year-old, criticising The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph in particular.

The State Parole Authority ticked off on the 28-year-old’s bid for freedom during a private hearing on Friday, nearly two months after she was sentenced over the fatal stabbing of Daniel McNulty in August 2014.

Wran, the daughter of former NSW premier Neville Wran, was locked up for being an accessory to the Redfern unit murder, robbery in company, and harbouring her boyfriend afterward.
