Sydneysiders were swapping scarves and mittens for T-shirts and shorts as the city experienced its third-warmest July on record.

The mercury reached 27C on July 22 at Sydney Airport amid several warm periods during the month, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Despite several chilly spells, the mean temperature for the month was 18.5C at Observatory Hill, more than two degrees above the average, while Sydney Airport recorded a mean of 19C.

“We had very warm sea surface temperatures off the NSW coast, then quite a few changes came through, including a few cold fronts,” BoM senior climatologist Agata Imielska said on Monday.

“With those changes, what tends to happen is you get windy conditions which bring a warm north or northwesterly airflow.”

The warmest July on record for Sydney was in 2013.

The warm winter temperatures followed the warmest autumn on record for the city.
