A Sydney hospital at the centre of a disastrous gas mix up has confirmed another newborn baby was affected by a loss of oxygen in 2014.

New South Wales health authorities have confirmed that an oxygen supply cut out while being used to resuscitate a newborn baby at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital in the earlier incident.

The hospital said the baby survived the incident.

“In January 2014 a baby was delivered in the birthing unit at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital who required resuscitation,” the hospital said in a statement.

“During resuscitation the oxygen cylinder emptied and staff transferred the baby to the Special Care Nursery to ensure ongoing oxygen supply for the resuscitation.”

The statement said the incident prompted the installation of constant oxygen supplies in the hospital’s birthing unit.

“Following an investigation into the birth, the hospital installed outlets in the birthing unit that provided a constant oxygen supply,” it said.

“Last week, the hospital also tested gas outlets in the birthing unit and confirmed the presence of oxygen from all outlets.

“The birthing unit is separate to the operating theatre complex.”

Hospital under investigation over death, injury of babies

Earlier this week, it was revealed one newborn baby died and another suffered suspected brain damage after being given nitrous oxide instead of oxygen at the same hospital.

NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner said both the hospital and gas company BOC were responsible for checking the gas line which administered the gas.

Ms Skinner has defended her handling of the matter and ruled out resigning.

However, Opposition Leader Luke Foley said the minister should be sacked.

He said Ms Skinner’s reaction to the incident was grotesquely insensitive, because she attended the Helpmann Awards ceremony as news of the tragedy broke.

Meanwhile, the family of the baby who died has said the hospital’s apparent error was shocking.

The child’s mother, Sonya Ghanem, said coming home without her baby was devastating.
