A man who allegedly fled from a Sydney court five days ago has been charged with escaping lawful custody after being arrested at an inner city unit.

Ali Chahine, 33, was answering bail breach allegations at Downing Centre District Court on Wednesday afternoon when he leapt from the dock, assaulted two officers and jumped on a bus barefoot, police allege.

• Manhunt for escaped prisoners
• Second charged in Darwin murder

Following a tip-off, officers forced entry into a unit in Newton Street, Alexandria around 7am on Monday morning and arrested Chahine, who was taken to St Vincent’s hospital where he was treated for a pre-existing condition.

He has also been charged with two counts of occasioning actual bodily harm.

Chahine didn’t apply for bail when his matter was mentioned at Parramatta Local Court on Monday.

He is due to front Sydney’s Central Local Court on Tuesday via audio visual link.
