Oral health focus of fun days

Rural families will be encouraged to think about health and lifestyle in a series of fun day events across the region this week.

Royal Far West has teamed with organisations including the Western Local Health District, the National Rugby League and Bila Muuji Aboriginal Medical Service to promote healthy living.

Fun days are being held in a number of local communities including Bourke, Walgett, Coonamble, Nyngan, Collarenebri, Gulargambone, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina and Goodooga.

Royal Far West spokeswoman, Donna Parkes, says it will allow young people to try out various sports while also learning about nutrition, health and in particular, dental care.

“We only have one set of teeth and once they start to decay and they don’t actually get replaced so it costs a lot of money and it also impacts on other areas of their life if they have poor oral hygiene,” she said.

Ms Parkes says while it is about stopping health problems before they occur, the events may allow clinicians to diagnose some existing problems.

“We might identify some kids that we come back and do some additional help with their oral hygiene and their teeth or pick them up in the community for other areas of health services so it’s a good opportunity for us to screen and identify kids that need further health care.”
