Walcha-Tamworth boundary talks about to begin

Tamworth Regional Council says it will begin formal discussions about altering the boundary that divides the local government areas of Tamworth and Walcha within the month.

Council last month resolved to further discuss plans to transfer 30 properties at Woolbrook from Tamworth’s control, to the control of the Walcha Shire Council.

Director of Corporate and Governance, Robert Charlesworth, says the adjustment’s being considered at the request of the community.

“They have issues in relation to the holding events, because whenever there was an event on, their recreation ground is in one area and their public hall is in another,” he said.

“They have to deal with two local government authorities to actually hold the one event and they believe they have more of a synergy with Walcha than, perhaps, with the rest of Tamworth.”

Robert Charlesworth says the formal discussions will also involve community participation.

“It would mean sending out a written application to Walcha to actually have the discussions on a formal footing,” he said.

“We would then engage with the whole of the Woolbrook community, not just those who’ve approached Council, especially the 30 property owners that are potentially affected by a boundary adjustment.”
