More traffic changes for Newcastle beachfront roads

Traffic changes approved for the road from Nobbys Beach to Newcastle beach.

The coastal road between Nobbys and Newcastle beaches is set to become one-way as council pushes ahead with the next stage of its Bathers Way public domain plan.

Councillors last night approved changes to Shortland Esplanade so that the oceanside pathway can be widened.

The road will become one-way heading south between Nobbys Road and Zaara Street and there will be a northbound cycle lane and on-street parking.

Greens councillor Michael Osborne says it is all about making the most of the coast.

“There’s some, I guess, disquiet in the community about whether it will work or not,” he said.

“But I think this is a good outcome where we’ll get more pedestrian and cycle access and space in that area.

“These sorts of works are an improvement of our city, not just for residents, but also for tourists.

“It brings people to the city, and they can walk along our coastal cycleways and walkways, and they can enjoy the beautiful aspects of Newcastle.”
