A husband and wife have died after being hit by a car in a Christmas Eve accident witnessed by their daughter in the north Queensland city of Townsville.

The man, 76, and woman, 75, both from Cairns, were struck by an SUV on Ross River Road in the Townsville suburb of Hermit Park.

They could not be revived and died at the scene.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said it was an incredibly distressing accident scene.

The couple’s 43-year-old daughter spoke to police at the scene of the accident.

All three had just been to a Christmas Eve church service and were walking when the accident occurred, just after 7pm.

Paramedics said the distraught 36-year-old male driver of the car that hit the couple was taken to Townsville hospital for treatment.

However, police said it was simply an accident and they did not expect to charge the man.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
