A 21-year-old man has been charged with terrorism offences after counter-terrorism police raided a home in Brisbane’s south on Saturday.

Police allege the man had prepared to travel to Syria as a foreign fighter between late 2016 and 2017.

“It will also be alleged he encouraged and recruited other people to join him in travelling to Syria, so they could also join organisations engaged in hostile activities against foreign governments,” a statement from the Australian Federal Police said.

“The investigation is ongoing, and as the matter proceeds through the court process, it is not appropriate to comment on other aspects of this investigation,” the statement said.

The man has been charged with preparing to travel overseas to engage in hostile activities, recruiting others to do so and helping them make plans to follow him.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Authorities have insisted there is no threat to the community as a result of the raid.
