Victorian senator Lidia Thorpe has suffered minor injuries in a car crash.

The independent senator was rear-ended while stationary in a vehicle at the end of last week in Melbourne.

She sustained minor injuries, including bruising and whiplash, according to a Sky News report.

Senator Thorpe’s office said she was “in pain but is all right”.

She did not travel to Canberra this week on doctor’s orders but is expected to return next week.

The outspoken senator, who split from the Greens earlier this year, had previously raised concerns about her safety and revealed she has formal protection.

She is a leading campaigner for Indigenous sovereignty and for the “no” campaign against the Voice referendum.
