Newly elected Kooyong MP Monique Ryan has reported to police a series of threatening and racist  letters sent to her supporters.

The independent MP says some of her supporters and campaign volunteers had received the “misogynistic, racist and threatening” handwritten letters over the past three weeks.

“It is extremely disappointing that people are being targeted for exercising their democratic rights,” Ms Ryan said in a statement on Monday.

“These cowardly anonymous threats are very distressing for the people who receive them.”

She said the Australian Federal Police had advised that anyone who had received one of the letters to contact their local police station.

The AFP has been contacted for comment, but have previously said they would not comment on matters that could be subject to an investigation.

Victoria Police was also unable to provide comment on the matter.

Dr Ryan, the former head of neurology at the Royal Children’s Hospital, won the seat of Kooyong at the recent federal election from then-treasurer Josh Frydenberg.
