Defence force hit by rising sexual assault claims

The navy has recorded the highest number of sexual assaults as the amount of offences in the Australian Defence Force increase.

A report released by the Director of Military Prosecutions on Monday revealed there were 47 sexual assault and related offences received by the office last year, up from 30 in 2021.

Despite being a smaller service than the army, there were 21 sexual offences received from the navy last year, with 18 offences in the army and eight in the RAAF.

Twelve sexual offences were received from the navy in 2021 and there were eight in the army and 10 in the air force.

A total of 128 offences were received by the office of the director of military prosecutions for the defence force in 2022.

There were two appeals to the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal last year.

Fraud and deception was the category with the second highest number of offences last year, with 34 across the services.

Acts intended to cause injury was the class of offence with the third highest number, 15 in total, with 10 in the army, and five in the navy.

In his report, Director of Military Prosecutions Air Commodore Ian Henderson wrote his office was adequately funded.

The Defence Department has been contacted for comment.
