The writing skills of Australian schoolchildren have reached an alarming new low, NAPLAN test results have shown.

The collective writing abilities of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia have declined since 2011 – the year NAPLAN introduced writing tests.

The greatest drops were seen among Year 9 students, with only 79.5 per cent achieving the national minimum standards for writing in 2018, compared with 84.8 per cent in 2011.

Take the series of quizzes below to find out whether you can pass a child’s NAPLAN writing test, otherwise known as a “language conventions” test.
