Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has once again proven he’s not a John Farnham fan, forgetting the lyrics to Farnham’s iconic, non-official anthem of Australia, You’re the Voice, a second time.

After Mr Turnbull was seen struggling to mouth the words to the song poolside at the swimming finals at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, he again failed to remember the lyrics in an interview with 3AW presenter Neil Mitchell on Thursday.

Following a series of questions on the hydrogen pilot plant in the Latrobe Valley and the struggling National Broadband Network, Mr Mitchell ended the interview making light of the PM’s karaoke skills.

“You don’t want to recite the verse to You’re the Voice, do you?” Mr Mitchell asked Mr Turnbull, referring to the Channel Seven footage of the PM mumbling the lyrics as the rest of the crowd at the Gold Coast’s Carrara Stadium belted them out.

Mr Turnbull laughed at Mr Mitchell’s request and joked, “There’s a good line in there for the Treasurer”, referring to Scott Morrison.

But as he began to perform Farnham’s lines, it was clear the Prime Minister could have benefitted from a teleprompter.

“‘Time to…’ um, was it? ‘Time to…’ um, was it time to, um, time to, ahhh, the bit about balancing the books,” Mr Turnbull said.

In a bid to assist the Prime Minister, Mr Mitchell interjected asking, “Not about ‘looking down the barrel of a gun’?”

“No looking down the barrel of a, no, sons and daughters?” Mr Turnbull asked, stumped.

Deciding to wrap up the interview Mr Mitchell said, “Never mind,” and laughed while Mr Turnbull persisted.

“There’s a good line in there for the Treasurer, I’ve just missed it,” Mr Turnbull continued, but Mr Mitchell assured, “We’ll get it later, good on you Prime Minister”.

Speaking to The New Daily, a media adviser for the Prime Minister declined to reveal whether Mr Turnbull knew the lyrics to the song.

“He’s been asked on radio about this four times this week, you can go look at the transcripts,” the media adviser said.

Australian journalist Barrie Cassidy awarded the Prime Minister a ‘wooden spoon’ on ABC Breakfast on Friday for the lyrical gaffe.

Mr Cassidy said he “didn’t necessarily blame” the PM for struggling to come up with the lyrics to You’re the Voice, but wondered why he didn’t have the lyrics written in front of him during the radio interview.

“Clearly someone had briefed him on this,” Mr Cassidy said of the PM trying to reference a line from the song.

Mr Cassidy quoted the lyrics Mr Turnbull had likely been looking for: “We gotta make ends meet, before we get much older”.

ABC journalist and presenter Virginia Trioli said she didn’t understand why it was a prerequisite for Australian politicians to know all the lines to You’re the Voice.

“Once upon a time politicians had to know the price of a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread, now it’s clearly the words to a John Farnham song, who knew?” Ms Trioli said.

It’s not the first time the PM has faltered to prove his Australian pop-culture knowledge.

In 2017, Mr Turnbull struggled to name one AC/DC song during a live radio interview after an impromptu rap battle with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.
