The parents of Queensland toddler Baden Bond have been remanded after appearing in court over charges for the alleged murder of their son, who went missing a decade ago.

Dina Colleen Bond, 43, and Shane Arthur Simpson, 49, have been accused of allegedly killing their 22-month-old son Baden Bond.

The toddler went missing in March 2007 and it is alleged he was killed sometime between March 26 and May 17 that year at Woodridge or elsewhere in Queensland.

The charges follow a public appeal for information launched by police on Wednesday after police determined the disappearance should be treated as a homicide investigation.

Detective Inspector Damien Hansen said the investigators had been unable “to find any evidence of Baden existing” after March 27, 2007.

“Someone out there must know what happened to a two-year-old child,” he told media on Wednesday.

Baden’s parents, who have a large number of children, moved to NSW from their Brisbane home less than six months after the toddler disappeared. He was not reported missing until 2016.

Det Insp Hansen said the family had given police “a number of versions” as to where Baden was, insisting the boy was alive and living with relatives, but he had not been found at those locations.

“[They said] that he is with relatives, he is with different people, but certainly all of our investigations have proved negative,” Det Insp Hansen said on Wednesday.

“We are treating this as a homicide now.”

Last year investigators dug up bones at the property where the family once lived. The bones were initially believed to be that of a dog.

Police said there had been no medical or educational records for Baden since he disappeared.

The boy would be 12 if he was alive today.

The court case has been adjourned to April 10.
