Australia Post is gearing up for the biggest delivery day in the nation’s history following a surge in online Christmas shopping.

More than two million parcels are expected to move through the postal service’s network on Monday.

Australia Post executive general manager Parcels Bob Black says the increase in parcel numbers is due to the boom in online shopping, with more people opting to purchase Christmas gifts on the net than ever before.

“We’re finding close to 30 per cent of all online purchases occur in the three months leading up to Christmas, and that’s on the back of a 15.9 per cent growth in online shopping this year,” Mr Black said.

Australia Post has been processing more than one million parcels every day since October, with consumers taking advantage of pre-Christmas sales and a surge in parcels from China, the US and UK.

Fashion, toys and games are the most popular purchases.

Extra posties and delivery drivers will be out on the road on Monday, while an additional 1500 workers will be on deck at Australia Post processing facilities.
