A Tasmanian radio host has been suspended from on-air duties after making an insensitive joke about Tuesday’s Dreamworld tragedy.

Anna Dare, co-host of 7OHM’s breakfast show, made the off-colour comment during a  Friday morning segment in which callers were asked to guess a secret sound.

After hearing the sound, Dare said that she “didn’t like it” because it was “violent sounding”.

“It’s not getting stuck in a conveyor belt at a theme park is it?” she asked, according to News.com.au.

“Too soon?”

It was too soon, with the powers that be immediately pulling Dare off air and suspending her until further notice.

Co-host and former My Kitchen Rules contestant Mick Newell simply responded with a disappointed sigh.

“That’s what it sounds like to me when I first heard it,” Dare insisted, “that’s the first thing I thought of”.

After suspending Dare, 7OHM released a statement on its website apologising for the ‘joke’.

“7OHM and its parent company, Grant Broadcasters, sincerely apologise for a comment made on air by an announcer this morning”.

“The comment was unacceptable and the announcer has been taken off air.

“The thoughts and prayers of all 7OHM and Grant Broadcasters staff are with the families and friends of all those who died in the tragedy.”

Dare will reportedly undergo counselling and sensitivity training before returning to the job.
