Crossbench Senator Glenn Lazarus said he would not be supporting the federal government’s construction watchdog bill if Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull fails to discuss the possibility of introducing a federal ICAC.

Mr Lazarus told Sky News on Wednesday morning “negotiations were dead in the water” if the PM did not consider other industries covered under the bill.

“If he’s not prepared to make it a national corruption watchdog I’m not going to vote for it.”

Mr Turnbull had previously stated he was not prepared to consider Mr Lazarus’ proposed changes, which were backed by other crossbenchers.

Mr Lazarus is one of eight senators analysing the bill which would reinstate the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC).

The PM recalled Parliament from April 18 to discuss the bill, among others.

A double dissolution election will be on the cards if the bills aren’t passed with the support of six of the eight cross bench Senators.

Senators John Madigan and Jacqui Lambie had already said they would not back the bill.

The government stated that any crossbench amendments to the ABCC legislation must be presented as a bloc of six.
