Protesters en route to PM’s office … with toys

Protesters wielding toys, school uniforms and books will target Malcolm Turnbull’s electoral office in Sydney arguing against Australia having children locked up in immigration detention.

There are 112 children in detention in Australia and 95 on Nauru.

“We’re taking toys, school uniforms, book and clothes to the Prime Minister’s office to remind him of all that’s been taken away from these children,” Getup spokeswoman Sally Rugg said in a statement.

The protest comes after the Senate voted to release children from detention earlier this week.

However, that same vote is not expected to pass the House of Representatives.

On the event’s Facebook page, Getup puts the responsibility for releasing children from detention on the Prime Minister’s shoulders.

“Malcolm Turnbull is the one person now standing in the way of children being freed from onshore detention, and he could make a decision either way as early as tomorrow,” the event description writes.

“We could see refugee children and their families rebuilding their lives in our communities within 30 days, but it’s up to us to get this over the line.

“That’s why we’ll gather at the Prime Minister’s office tomorrow morning with toys, children’s clothes, school bags and more childhood items to show him the childhood these children should be having, here in Australia.

“To make this snap rally effective, we need as many people as possible to attend, bringing children’s toys with them for a compelling media stunt. Will you and your friends be there?”

The protest is planned for 10am on Wednesday.
