Pizza Hut investigating claims of wage fraud

Fast food chain Pizza Hut takes alleged claims of underpaying staff “very seriously”, as reports of suspect practices with delivery driver renumeration emerge.

In a statement to The New Daily, Pizza Hut general manager, Graeme Houston, said the chain was investigating the claims.

“Pizza Hut is investigating claims that some franchisees are not acting in accordance with our existing enterprise agreement with the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA),” Mr Houston said.

“We have not seen the contract referred to in media coverage and therefore cannot make specific comments at this stage.

“We take these claims very seriously and will ensure our investigation is a priority for the business.”

Fairfax Media reported on Monday that Pizza Hut was allegedly paying its delivery drivers $12 an hour, with no superannuation or WorkCover.

In a contract revealed in the story, a driver could earn $6 each delivery, with no more than two deliveries in each round trip.

Pizza Hut is currently fighting franchisees in the Federal Court.

They launched a class action against the pizza chain alleging “unsociable conduct” by head office under the franchising code.

The chain has been fighting for profit in the past five years, as fellow chain Domino’s and other premium chains quickly enhance competition.

Earlier in 2015, a joint Fairfax and ABC investigation uncovered widespread exploitation of workers at the 7-Eleven convenience store chain.
