Baird, Andrews dominate state polls

New South Wales Liberal Premier Mike Baird and Victorian Labor Premier Daniel Andrews have maintained significant advantages over their respective oppositions, according to the latest state-based Morgan polls.

In NSW, Mr Baird’s Liberal-National Party Coalition government hold a 14 per cent lead over Labor in the two-party-preferred poll.

In Victoria, Mr Andrews’ Labor government enjoys the same lead. The Liberal Opposition’s two-party-preferred support dropped half a percent.

In NSW the Labor Opposition’s support dropped 1 per cent.

On the preferred Premier measure, Mr Baird holds a 44 per cent lead over Luke Foley. Mr Andrews in Victoria is in front of Matthew Guy by 22 per cent, which is a 6 per cent drop.

Across the other states’ two-party-preferred polling, Labor leads in Queensland (4 per cent margin), South Australia (1 per cent), Tasmania (10 per cent), while in Western Australia voting is tied.

The polling also reveals real unemployment is highest in Tasmania (12 per cent), with South Australia (11.5 per cent) and Western Australia (9.3 per cent) trailing behind.

The voting period for the polling was conducted from August 28 to 31.

Pollster Roy Morgan put part of Mr Andrews’ popularity down to his support for the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement.

“Andrews’ support for ChAFTA helps to negate his poor image amongst business owners after immediately being elected announcing two extra public holidays (Easter Sunday and Grand Final Day eve) while Victoria has massive unemployment and under-employment (15.8 per cent) which is causing many families economic hard times,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Baird’s results keep him in the position of Australia’s most popular state Premier.

The next state expected to hold an election is Western Australia in March 2017.
